Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Rossburg OH electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Rossburg OH. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you wish to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the three most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Ohio technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards students who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to finish and are provided by Ohio community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Ohio institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Rossburg OH electrician wiring boxElectricians in Rossburg OH can perform a wide range of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly about four to five years of practical experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be acquired in various specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Programs

Rossburg OH student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have considered is choosing an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be attended online, internet learning may be a more practical choice for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Commuting costs from Rossburg OH are also lessened and some of the study materials may be accessed on line also. Each of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Rossburg OH electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Rossburg OH region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other factors that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Rossburg OH program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a superior education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Rossburg OH grads obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Rossburg OH area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Rossburg OH electrical contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Rossburg home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with several of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Rossburg OH, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
