How to Choose the Best Electrician Trade School near Dover Oklahoma

Dover OK electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Dover OK. But with so many technical schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the best one? Especially since there are so many variables to consider. For instance, some students will start by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. Once they have found a few that are within commuting range, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though location and cost are important, they are not the sole things that should be considered. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should contribute toward your ultimate decision when choosing an electrician trade school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the training choices that are available.

Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Dover OK electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Dover OK. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Oklahoma vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to complete and are provided by Oklahoma junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Oklahoma institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Dover OK electrician wiring boxElectricians in Dover OK can perform a wide range of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams typically assess electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you choose not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Programs

Dover OK student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have looked at is enrolling in an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs are becoming more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning can be a more accommodating alternative for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Driving costs from Dover OK are also reduced and some of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. All of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Dover OK electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Dover OK area, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are additional factors that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Dover OK school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Dover OK grads obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Dover OK area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Dover OK electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Dover residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Dover OK, check that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Dover, Oklahoma

The area around Dover was ideal for cattle grazing, By 1884, all the land had been leased to cattlemen. The Red Fork Traders' Ranch had been established near the Chisholm Trail. The land was opened for settlement by the Land Run of 1889, and the trading post was well-placed to benefit from the farmers that settled nearby.[4]

The Rock Island built a track through the Traders' Ranch and constructed abridge across the Cimarron River in October, 1889. A settlement called Red Wing grew up around the ranch. In 1890, a post office designated "Dover" was established, and the community took that name. By 1893, the community had an estimated 150 residents. The population grew to about 500 by1910.[4]

On September 18, 1906, a bridge across the Cimarron River near Dover collapsed beneath a Rock Island train bound for Fort Worth, Texas from Chicago. The bridge was a temporary structure unable to withstand the pressure of debris and high water. Replacement with a permanent structure had been delayed by the railroad for financial reasons. Several sources report that over 100 persons were killed,[4][5][6] although this figure is disputed. The true number may be as low as 4.[7]
