Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Martha OK electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Martha OK. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Often these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Bellow are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Oklahoma technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to complete and are offered by Oklahoma community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Oklahoma colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally around four to five years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to take in the future.
