Even though cost and location are important, they are not the only things that should be evaluated. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Yeagertown PA electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Yeagertown PA. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the three most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Pennsylvania technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are provided by Pennsylvania junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Pennsylvania institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Yeagertown PA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Yeagertown PA can undertake a multitude of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around four to five years of experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and can be obtained in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you select not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Yeagertown PA student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have contemplated is selecting an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning can be a more accommodating option for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Driving expenses from Yeagertown PA are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Yeagertown PA electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Yeagertown PA area, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The first two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional variables that must be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Yeagertown PA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Yeagertown PA students secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Yeagertown PA area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Yeagertown PA electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Yeagertown residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Yeagertown PA, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
