Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Allen SD electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Allen SD. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. In many cases these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you would like to become certified. Following are short explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by South Dakota trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to complete and are offered by South Dakota community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain South Dakota institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of experience is needed before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in various specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you pick not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to pass in the future.
