Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Bruceton TN electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Bruceton TN. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Tennessee vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to finish and are offered by Tennessee community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Tennessee institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in several specializations, including cable splicing as an example.
