Parrottsville TN electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Parrottsville TN. But with so many vocational schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are so many factors to evaluate. For example, some prospective students will start by looking for schools that are close to their residence. Once they have located several that are within driving range, they will choose the one with the lowest tuition. While cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole factors that should be examined. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your final judgment when selecting an electrician training school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this post. Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Parrottsville TN electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Parrottsville TN. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are short descriptions of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by Tennessee trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to complete and are offered by Tennessee community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Tennessee colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Parrottsville TN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Parrottsville TN can carry out a vast array of functions, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be obtained in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, distance learning can be a more accommodating choice for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Travelling costs from Parrottsville TN are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be available online as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Parrottsville TN electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Parrottsville TN area, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are other variables that must be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze prior to choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Parrottsville TN program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive a quality education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Parrottsville TN students secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Parrottsville TN area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Parrottsville TN electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Parrottsville home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Parrottsville TN, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
