Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Sumner TX electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Sumner TX. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states in order to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are brief explanations of the three most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Texas trade and technical schools and require about a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are offered by Texas junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Texas colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Guidelines

Sumner TX electrician wiring boxElectricians in Sumner TX can perform a multitude of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be earned in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you select not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Sumner TX student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have looked at is choosing an online electrician program to earn a certificate or degree. Although online schools have become more popular as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, distance learning may be a more convenient choice for students that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Travelling expenses from Sumner TX are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Sumner TX electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Sumner TX area, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional variables that need to be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Sumner TX school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get a quality education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Sumner TX students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Sumner TX area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Sumner TX electrical contractor if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Sumner residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Sumner TX, confirm that the schools you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
