Sandy Level VA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Sandy Level VA. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the best one? Especially since there are so many points to consider. For instance, many prospective students will commence by looking for schools that are nearby their residence. After they have located a few that are within driving range, they will pick the one with the lowest tuition. While location and cost are significant, they are not the only factors that need to be evaluated. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your final decision when picking an electrician school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this post. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Sandy Level VA electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Sandy Level VA. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Following are brief explanations of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Virginia technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards students who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are offered by Virginia community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Virginia colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Sandy Level VA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Sandy Level VA can perform a multitude of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around four to five years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be obtained in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you select not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Sandy Level VA student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have looked at is selecting an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs have become more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more convenient choice for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Travelling costs from Sandy Level VA are also reduced and some of the study materials can be available online also. All of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Sandy Level VA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Sandy Level VA region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The initial two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are other variables that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Sandy Level VA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also signify that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Sandy Level VA students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Sandy Level VA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Sandy Level VA electrical company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Sandy Level home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Sandy Level VA, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
