Troutville VA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Troutville VA. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you approach making certain that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are a number of variables to examine. For example, many prospective students will commence by looking for schools that are close to their home. Once they have identified several that are within driving distance, they will select the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though cost and location are significant, they are not the sole factors that need to be considered. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifications should influence your ultimate judgment when choosing an electrician school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training choices that are available.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Troutville VA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Troutville VA. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Bellow are short explanations of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually provided by Virginia technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are provided by Virginia community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Virginia institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

Troutville VA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Troutville VA can perform a multitude of functions, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around 4 to 5 years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Troutville VA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have contemplated is choosing an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician schools require partial attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning may be a more accommodating option for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Commuting expenses from Troutville VA are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available online also. All of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Troutville VA electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Considering that there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Troutville VA area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first two that we talked about were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are additional variables that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the Troutville VA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Troutville VA graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Troutville VA area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Troutville VA electrical contractor if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Troutville home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Troutville VA, verify that the schools you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
