Weyers Cave VA electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Weyers Cave VA. But with numerous technical schools to choose from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially because there are so many variables to consider. For instance, some prospective students will start by looking for schools that are close to their home. After they have identified some that are within driving range, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. While cost and location are significant, they are not the sole things that should be examined. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your final judgment when selecting an electrician training school. We will address that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the instructional choices that are accessible.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Weyers Cave VA electrician on power line poleThere are three general approaches to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Weyers Cave VA. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the three most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Virginia trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who wish to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to finish and are offered by Virginia community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain Virginia institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

Weyers Cave VA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Weyers Cave VA can undertake a multitude of functions, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly around four to five years of experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be acquired in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you pick not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Weyers Cave VA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have considered is choosing an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online training programs are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning might be a more practical choice for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Travelling expenses from Weyers Cave VA are also lessened and some of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Weyers Cave VA electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Since there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Weyers Cave VA region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The first two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional variables that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Weyers Cave VA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a superior education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Weyers Cave VA graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Weyers Cave VA area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Weyers Cave VA electrical contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Weyers Cave residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Weyers Cave VA, confirm that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Electrical Technician Schools and wanting more information on the topic Electrician Training Requirements. But as we have addressed in this article, there are several factors that you will need to examine and compare among the training programs you are looking at. It’s a prerequisite that any electrician training program that you are reviewing includes a considerable amount of hands-on instruction. Classes should be smaller in size and each student should have their own equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to provide a real-world context, and the curriculum should be current and conform with industry standards. Training programs vary in duration and the type of credential provided, so you will have to determine what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Every program offers different options for certification as well. Perhaps the best way to research your short list of schools is to go to each campus and speak with the students and faculty. Take the time to monitor some classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the school you pick is the right one for you.
