Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Othello WA electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Othello WA. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. In many cases these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are short explanations of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Washington technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to complete and are provided by Washington community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at some Washington colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Othello WA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Othello WA can undertake a wide range of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually about four to five years of experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be obtained in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you choose not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to take in the future.

But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, distance learning may be a more accommodating option for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Othello WA are also lessened and some of the study materials can be available on line also. All of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Othello WA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Othello WA area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The initial two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are additional variables that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to assess before choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Othello WA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Othello WA students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Othello WA area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Othello WA electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Othello residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Othello WA, confirm that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

    Othello, Washington

Othello (/oʊˈθɛloʊ/) is a city in Adams County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,847 at the 2000 census and grew 25.9% over the next decade to 7,364 at the 2010 census. In the 2018 census, it was 8,099. Othello refers to the city as being in the "Heart" of the Columbia Basin Project. It is located approximately 100 miles (160 km) southwest of Spokane, 180 miles (290 km) east of Seattle, and about 25 miles (40 km) south of Interstate 90, at the intersection of SR 17 and SR 26.

Othello has many outdoor recreation opportunities.[5] The Columbia National Wildlife Refuge is about 5 miles (8.0 km) away with 23,200 acres (94 km2) of land for hiking, fishing, biking and wildlife viewing.[5] Othello also has a single 9-hole public golf course, three miles (5 km) outside of the city limits to the southwest.[5]

An influx of homesteaders began after the start of the 20th century, and a post office was established in 1904. The post office was named Othello after a post office also called Othello in Roane County, Tennessee.
