Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Egg Harbor WI electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Egg Harbor WI. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Wisconsin vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to finish and are provided by Wisconsin junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Wisconsin institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Egg Harbor WI electrician wiring boxElectricians in Egg Harbor WI can perform a multitude of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally around four to five years of prior experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be earned in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you select not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Schools Online

Egg Harbor WI student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have contemplated is selecting an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning might be a more accommodating option for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Travelling expenses from Egg Harbor WI are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be available on line as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Egg Harbor WI electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Because there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Egg Harbor WI region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are other variables that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research prior to enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the Egg Harbor WI school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Egg Harbor WI students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Egg Harbor WI area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Egg Harbor WI electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Egg Harbor home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Egg Harbor WI, verify that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
