Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Rubicon WI electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Rubicon WI. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are short explanations of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Wisconsin vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who want to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to finish and are provided by Wisconsin junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Wisconsin colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Rubicon WI electrician wiring boxElectricians in Rubicon WI can perform a wide range of tasks, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be obtained in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you select not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Programs

Rubicon WI student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have contemplated is choosing an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more accommodating alternative for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Driving expenses from Rubicon WI are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be available on line also. All of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Rubicon WI electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Rubicon WI area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional factors that need to be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Rubicon WI program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Rubicon WI students secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Rubicon WI area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Rubicon WI electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Rubicon home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Rubicon WI, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
