Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Osage WY electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Osage WY. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you would like to become certified. Following are brief explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Wyoming technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are offered by Wyoming junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Wyoming institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Osage WY electrician wiring boxElectricians in Osage WY can undertake a wide range of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but typically around four to five years of practical experience is required in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in numerous specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Programs

Osage WY student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have considered is choosing an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools have become more accepted as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning might be a more accommodating choice for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Commuting costs from Osage WY are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be available on line also. All of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Osage WY electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to focus your school options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Osage WY area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The first two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other factors that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Osage WY school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Osage WY grads obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Osage WY area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Osage WY electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Osage home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Osage WY, verify that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
