You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Alaska trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards those who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to finish and are offered by Alaska community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Alaska institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Karluk AK electrical contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Karluk residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.
