Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Nulato AK electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Nulato AK. You can choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are short summaries of the three most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by Alaska vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to finish and are provided by Alaska junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Alaska colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about four to five years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be obtained in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Nulato AK student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have contemplated is enrolling in an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more convenient choice for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Travelling costs from Nulato AK are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be available online also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Nulato AK electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to refine your training options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Nulato AK area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your determination, there are additional variables that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make certain that the Nulato AK school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Nulato AK graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Nulato AK area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Nulato AK electrical company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Nulato residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Nulato AK, confirm that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

    Nulato, Alaska

Nulato (/nuːˈlætoʊ/; Noolaaghe Doh /nuːlaːɣə tɔːχ/, (chum salmon fish camp) in Koyukon, Russian: Нулато) is a city in Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, Alaska, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 336.

After the Alaska Purchase, a United States military telegraph line was constructed along the north side of the Yukon River. The gold rush along the Yukon River that began in 1884 brought many new diseases to the area and many people died. A measles epidemic and food shortages during 1900 reduced the population of the area by one-third. 1900 was also the peak year for steamboat travel on the Yukon River, with 46 boats in operation. That summer, two boats per day stopped at Nulato to purchase firewood.[citation needed]

Nulato is on the west bank of the Yukon River, 53 km (33 mi) west of Galena, in the Nulato Hills. It is across the Yukon River from the Innoko National Wildlife Refuge. The area experiences a cold, continental climate with extreme temperature differences. Temperatures range from -70F to 80F. Average precipitation is 15.6 inches, with 74 inches of snowfall annually.
