Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Sierra Vista AZ electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Sierra Vista AZ. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most common programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Arizona technical and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are offered by Arizona community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Arizona institutions, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Sierra Vista AZ electrician wiring boxElectricians in Sierra Vista AZ can undertake a wide range of functions, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually about four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually assess electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and can be earned in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Schools

Sierra Vista AZ student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have contemplated is selecting an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, internet learning can be a more convenient alternative for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Travelling expenses from Sierra Vista AZ are also lessened and some of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Sierra Vista AZ electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Sierra Vista AZ region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other variables that must be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Sierra Vista AZ school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Sierra Vista AZ graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Sierra Vista AZ area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Sierra Vista AZ electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Sierra Vista residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Sierra Vista AZ, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

    Sierra Vista, Arizona

Sierra Vista is a city in Cochise County, Arizona, United States. As of the 2010 census the population of the city was 43,888.[4] The city is part of the Sierra Vista-Douglas Metropolitan Area,[5] with a 2010 population of 131,346. Fort Huachuca, a U.S. Army post, is located in the northwest part of the city.

As evidenced by several neolithic sites[6] and known archeological sites, Paleo-Indians[7] have been in southern Arizona from at least 12,000 years ago. It was the home to a large Sobaipuri,[8] Pueblo near Fairbank[9] which had several smaller pueblos and settlements[10] throughout the valley,[11][12] a Spanish Fort, Presidio Santa Cruz de Terrenate [10][13] between modern Huachuca City, Whetstone and Tombstone, on the Western bank of the San Pedro River.[8] along with sparse Spanish settlers supporting the route to Tucson's Mission San Xavier del Bac and Presidio San Agustín del Tucsón.[14][15][16]

Like most of Cochise County it was part of the Gadsden Purchase.[17] At the end of the Apache Wars, with the protection of Fort Huachuca[18] and the completion of the Southern Pacific and El Paso & Southwestern railroads, the San Pedro Valley began to be populated by American Settlers.[19][20]
