Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

West Ridge AR electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near West Ridge AR. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are short explanations of the three most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Arkansas technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards those who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are provided by Arkansas junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Arkansas institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Requirements

After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly around four to five years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you pick not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Just about all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more convenient choice for individuals that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional counterparts. Driving expenses from West Ridge AR are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be accessed on line as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online tech schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask West Ridge AR electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Since there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the West Ridge AR region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The first 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are additional variables that need to be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the West Ridge AR program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help West Ridge AR grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with West Ridge AR area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local West Ridge AR electrical contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your West Ridge home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near West Ridge AR, confirm that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Pea Ridge, Arkansas

Pea Ridge is a city in Benton County, Arkansas, United States. The name Pea Ridge is derived from a combination of the physical location of the original settlement of the town, across the crest of an Ozark Mountains ridge, and for the hog peanuts or turkey peas that had been originally cultivated by Native American tribes centuries before European settlement, which later helped to provide basic subsistence once those pioneer settlers arrived.
