Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Capay CA electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to receive electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Capay CA. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by California trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are offered by California community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some California colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Requirements

Capay CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Capay CA can carry out a multitude of functions, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually about four to five years of practical experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically assess electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Capay CA student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you might have contemplated is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools have become more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more practical choice for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Capay CA are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be accessed on line as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Capay CA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your training options. Because there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Capay CA region, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are additional factors that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research prior to enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Capay CA program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Capay CA grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Capay CA area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Capay CA electrical company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Capay residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to several of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Capay CA, confirm that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

    Capay, California

Capay (formerly Munchville and Langville)[1] is an unincorporated community in Yolo County, California. It is located on Cache Creek 2 miles (3.2 km) west-northwest of Esparto,[2] in the Capay Valley, in the northwestern part of the county. Capay's ZIP Code is 95607 and its area code 530. It lies at an elevation of 210 feet (64 m). The name Capay comes from the Southern Wintun Indian word for "stream".[3]

Capay is located on the Mexican land grant Rancho Canada de Capay. Capay was originally named Munchville after one of the first white settlers, a man named Munch, who built a house on the Cache Creek at the site in 1857.[4] Mr. Empyre and Mr. Munch built a two-story building in the area.[3] The town acquired the name Langville after John A. Lang.[3] In 1870 Lang operated a hotel and owned a brick yard and a store. Langville grew enough to have a town plat filed on January 1, 1875, which renamed the town as Capay.[3]

This region experiences hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Capay has a typical Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csa" on climate maps.[5]
