Joshua Tree CA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Joshua Tree CA. But with so many technical schools to pick from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Particularly because there are a number of factors to consider. For example, some students will start by looking for schools that are close to their home. After they have located a few that are within driving range, they will pick the one with the most affordable tuition. While cost and location are important, they are not the only qualifications that should be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifiers should influence your ultimate judgment when choosing an electrician trade school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the educational choices that are available.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Joshua Tree CA electrician on power line poleThere are several options to obtain electrician training in a trade or technical school near Joshua Tree CA. You can enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are brief explanations of the three most common programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by California technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are provided by California community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain California colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Joshua Tree CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Joshua Tree CA can carry out a vast array of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in many specializations, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Programs

Joshua Tree CA student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have looked at is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not totally internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning may be a more accommodating choice for individuals that have limited time for education. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Travelling expenses from Joshua Tree CA are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be available on line also. All of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Joshua Tree CA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Since there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Joshua Tree CA area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are additional variables that must be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze prior to choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Joshua Tree CA school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Joshua Tree CA grads secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Joshua Tree CA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Joshua Tree CA electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Joshua Tree home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Joshua Tree CA, check that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

It’s a necessity that any electrician training program that you are evaluating includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classes need to be smaller in size and every student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom teaching needs to provide a real-world context, and the training program should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards.
