Nipomo CA electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is locating an electrician trade school near Nipomo CA. But with numerous technical schools to pick from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Particularly since there are a number of points to consider. For example, some prospective students will start by searching for schools that are close to their home. When they have located a few that are within commuting range, they will pick the one with the most affordable tuition. While location and cost are significant, they are not the sole qualifications that should be examined. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should help mold your ultimate decision when selecting an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this article. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Nipomo CA electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Nipomo CA. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by California trade and technical schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to complete and are provided by California junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some California colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Prerequisites

Nipomo CA electrician wiring boxElectricians in Nipomo CA can undertake a wide range of duties, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally about four to five years of practical experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be earned in many specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you pick not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to pass in the future.

While online training programs have become more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, internet learning might be a more convenient option for individuals that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Commuting expenses from Nipomo CA are also lessened and some of the study materials can be accessed online as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Nipomo CA electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to narrow down your school options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Nipomo CA area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are additional variables that need to be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make certain that the Nipomo CA program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Nipomo CA students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Nipomo CA area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Nipomo CA electrical contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Nipomo residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Nipomo CA, verify that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
