Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Westcliffe CO electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Westcliffe CO. You may choose a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief summaries of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Colorado technical and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are provided by Colorado junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Colorado institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. Because of that, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Requirements

Westcliffe CO electrician wiring boxElectricians in Westcliffe CO can carry out a vast array of tasks, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually about four to five years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be acquired in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually involves three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Training Classes

Westcliffe CO student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you might have looked at is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools have become more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning might be a more convenient option for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online training programs have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Driving expenses from Westcliffe CO are also reduced and some of the study materials can be accessed online as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will address in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Westcliffe CO electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Westcliffe CO region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The first two that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are other factors that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Westcliffe CO school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Westcliffe CO students obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Westcliffe CO area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Westcliffe CO electrical contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Westcliffe residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Westcliffe CO, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.

But as we have discussed in this article, there are a number of things that you will need to evaluate and compare among the training programs you are reviewing. It’s a prerequisite that any electrical tech school that you are considering includes a good deal of hands-on training. Classes should be small in size and each student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom instruction needs to offer a real-world frame of reference, and the course of study should be current and in-line with industry standards. Courses differ in duration and the kind of credential provided, so you will have to decide what length of program and certificate or degree will best fulfill your needs. Every training program offers different options for certification as well. Perhaps the best approach to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the students and faculty. Take the time to monitor a few classes.
