Eastford CT electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is finding an electrician trade school near Eastford CT. But with numerous technical schools to select from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are so many variables to consider. For example, some students will commence by searching for schools that are close to their residence. After they have found several that are within commuting range, they will select the one with the least expensive tuition. While location and cost are significant, they are not the only qualifications that need to be considered. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your ultimate judgment when choosing an electrician trade school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this article. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Eastford CT electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Eastford CT. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states in order to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are short summaries of the three most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Connecticut technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to complete and are provided by Connecticut community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Connecticut colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Eastford CT electrician wiring boxElectricians in Eastford CT can undertake a multitude of tasks, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but usually around four to five years of practical experience is required before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might be required to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Online Schools

Eastford CT student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have considered is choosing an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. While online training programs have become more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require some attendance on campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, distance learning can be a more practical choice for individuals that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Driving costs from Eastford CT are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online also. All of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Eastford CT electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Because there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Eastford CT region, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional variables that need to be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess before enrolling in an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Eastford CT school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get a superior education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It may also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Eastford CT graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Eastford CT area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Eastford CT electrical company if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Eastford residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Eastford CT, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
