Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Higganum CT electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Higganum CT. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you wish to become certified. Bellow are short explanations of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Connecticut technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are aimed towards students who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to finish and are provided by Connecticut junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Connecticut institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Criteria

Higganum CT electrician wiring boxElectricians in Higganum CT can undertake a vast array of functions, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally about four to five years of prior experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be acquired in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you pick not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to pass in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Programs Online

Higganum CT student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have contemplated is enrolling in an electrician online school to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning can be a more convenient alternative for students that have limited time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Driving costs from Higganum CT are also lessened and some of the study materials may be available online as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Higganum CT electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your school options. Because there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Higganum CT region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The first two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are additional variables that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research before choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the Higganum CT school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it can help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Higganum CT grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Higganum CT area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Higganum CT electrical contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Higganum residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Higganum CT, verify that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
