Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Chokoloskee FL electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Chokoloskee FL. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at a few schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Florida trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who wish to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are provided by Florida community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Florida colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed before licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Chokoloskee FL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Chokoloskee FL can carry out a vast array of tasks, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about 4 to 5 years of experience is required in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be obtained in numerous specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Programs

Chokoloskee FL student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have contemplated is choosing an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools have become more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes can be attended online, distance learning might be a more accommodating alternative for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Travelling costs from Chokoloskee FL are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be available on line as well. All of these benefits can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will discuss in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Chokoloskee FL electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Because there are numerous electrician vocational and trade schools in the Chokoloskee FL region, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are additional variables that must be taken into account also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research before choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example electrical technology. Make sure that the Chokoloskee FL school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Chokoloskee FL students acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Chokoloskee FL area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Chokoloskee FL electrical company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Chokoloskee residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Chokoloskee FL, check that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

Classroom education should offer a real-world context, and the training program should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Training programs differ in duration and the type of credential provided, so you will have to determine what length of program and credential will best serve your needs. Each training program offers unique possibilities for certification also. Perhaps The ideal approach to research your short list of schools is to go to each campus and speak with the students and faculty. Invest some time to sit in on a few classes. Chokoloskee is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) located at the edge of the Ten Thousand Islands in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 359 at the 2010 census.[3] It is part of the Naples–Marco Island Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Chokoloskee was inhabited by Native Americans for about 1500 years before European explorers first visited the island. It was briefly visited by Seminoles and the United States Army in the 1800s, and the current settlement can be traced back to 1874. Today, the isolated community's economy is largely based on boating and recreational boat fishing in the Ten Thousand Islands and the nearby Gulf of Mexico and ecotourism to nearby Everglades National Park.

The bay is about 10 miles (16 km) long and 2 miles (3 km) wide, and runs southeast to northwest along the mainland of Collier County. It is separated from the Gulf of Mexico by the northern end of the Ten Thousand Islands.[4] Chokoloskee Island is connected to Everglades City on the mainland by a causeway.
