How to Select the Right Electrician Trade School near Goodland Florida

Goodland FL electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Goodland FL. But with so many vocational schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the best one? Especially since there are so many variables to consider. For instance, many prospective students will commence by looking for schools that are nearby their home. When they have located several that are within driving range, they will pick the one with the least expensive tuition. Even though location and cost are significant, they are not the sole qualifications that need to be examined. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your final judgment when selecting an electrician trade school. We will address that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the instructional choices that are accessible.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Goodland FL electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to get electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Goodland FL. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you would like to become certified. Following are short descriptions of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Florida technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require 2 years to finish and are offered by Florida junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some Florida colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Goodland FL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Goodland FL can undertake a multitude of tasks, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around four to five years of experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually assess electrical theory and general knowledge, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be obtained in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician trade school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Goodland FL student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have considered is enrolling in an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. While online training programs are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require some attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the remainder of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning might be a more convenient choice for students that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Driving costs from Goodland FL are also reduced and some of the study materials can be accessed online as well. All of these benefits can make electrician online tech schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Goodland FL electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Since there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Goodland FL region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial 2 that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are additional factors that need to be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Goodland FL program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a quality education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Goodland FL students secure apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Goodland FL area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Goodland FL electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your Goodland home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Goodland FL, check that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Top Electrician Colleges and wanting more information on the topic How Can I Become An Electrician. But as we have covered in this article, there are a number of things that you will need to examine and compare between the schools you are reviewing. It’s a necessity that any electrical training program that you are considering includes a lot of hands-on instruction. Classes should be small in size and each student should have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom instruction should offer a real-world context, and the training program should be current and in-line with industry standards. Courses vary in duration and the kind of credential offered, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and degree or certificate will best serve your needs. Every program provides unique options for certification also. Perhaps the best means to research your final list of schools is to check out each campus and talk with the teachers and students.
