Patrick Afb FL electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Patrick Afb FL. But with so many technical schools to pick from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the best one? Particularly because there are so many variables to examine. For example, many potential students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their home. Once they have located a few that are within commuting range, they will choose the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though location and cost are of importance, they are not the only things that need to be evaluated. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should contribute toward your final judgment when choosing an electrician trade school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this post. But first, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the training options that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Patrick Afb FL electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to obtain electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Patrick Afb FL. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three options. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Bellow are brief explanations of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Florida vocational and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to complete and are offered by Florida community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Florida institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases 4 years be completed before licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Patrick Afb FL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Patrick Afb FL can carry out a vast array of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but generally about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams commonly assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be acquired in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only provides a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to pass in the future.

But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning may be a more accommodating option for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus competitors. Driving expenses from Patrick Afb FL are also minimized and a portion of the study materials may be available online also. All of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more economical and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Patrick Afb FL electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Patrick Afb FL area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are additional factors that must be considered also. Below is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Verify that the Patrick Afb FL school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Patrick Afb FL students secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Patrick Afb FL area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Patrick Afb FL electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Patrick Afb residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Patrick Afb FL, check that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
