Chadwick IL electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Chadwick IL. But with so many vocational schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making certain that you enroll in the right one? Particularly since there are a number of variables to evaluate. For example, many students will start by searching for schools that are close to their home. After they have found some that are within driving distance, they will select the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though cost and location are of importance, they are not the only factors that must be considered. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. These and additional qualifications should influence your final judgment when picking an electrician school. We will cover that checklist in more detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the training choices that are available.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Chadwick IL electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to obtain electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Chadwick IL. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by Illinois technical and trade schools and take approximately a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are aimed towards individuals who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to complete and are offered by Illinois junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Illinois colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be performed prior to licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Chadwick IL electrician wiring boxElectricians in Chadwick IL can carry out a multitude of duties, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically around four to five years of practical experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be obtained in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only delivers a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Chadwick IL student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have contemplated is choosing an online electrician school to earn a degree or a certificate. While online schools are becoming more accepted as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning may be a more accommodating choice for students that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Travelling expenses from Chadwick IL are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be available online as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Chadwick IL electrician schoolsNow that you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Considering that there are so many electrician vocational and trade schools in the Chadwick IL area, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we mentioned were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your decision, there are other variables that need to be taken into account also. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to research before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Chadwick IL school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Chadwick IL graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Chadwick IL area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Chadwick IL electrical contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Chadwick home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Chadwick IL, check that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.

Classroom teaching should offer a real-world context, and the course of study should be current and in-line with industry standards. Training programs differ in duration and the type of credential provided, so you will need to ascertain what length of program and degree or certificate will best fulfill your needs. Each training program provides unique options for certification also. Probably the best way to research your final list of schools is to check out each campus and speak with the students and instructors. Invest some time to sit in on a few classes.
