East Dubuque IL electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near East Dubuque IL. But with so many vocational schools to choose from, just how do you tackle making sure that you enroll in the right one? Especially since there are so many variables to examine. For instance, many students will commence by looking for schools that are close to their residence. When they have found a few that are within driving range, they will select the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though location and cost are of importance, they are not the sole things that should be considered. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should influence your ultimate judgment when choosing an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational options that are accessible.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

East Dubuque IL electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to get electrician training in a technical or vocational school near East Dubuque IL. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Illinois technical and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to complete and are offered by Illinois junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain Illinois colleges, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, most students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

East Dubuque IL electrician wiring boxElectricians in East Dubuque IL can undertake a multitude of services, such as installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around four to five years of prior experience is needed in order to take the licensing exam. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be obtained in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you choose not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you may need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Training Classes Online

East Dubuque IL student attending electrician school onlineAn alternative that you may have considered is enrolling in an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools have become more popular as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this instance they are not completely internet based. Just about all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to obtain hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning may be a more practical alternative for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus competitors. Driving costs from East Dubuque IL are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be available online also. All of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask East Dubuque IL electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the East Dubuque IL region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that must be a feature that your chosen school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be crucial when making your selection, there are other factors that must be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to assess prior to choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the East Dubuque IL program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also mean that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help East Dubuque IL grads acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with East Dubuque IL area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local East Dubuque IL electrical company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your East Dubuque home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near East Dubuque IL, check that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.

You originally came to this website due to an interest in Electrician Course Cost and wanting more information on the topic Top Electrician Colleges. But as we have addressed in this article, there are several factors that you will need to assess and compare among the schools you are considering. It’s a must that any electrician tech school that you are assessing includes a lot of hands-on training. Classes need to be small in size and every student must have their own equipment to train with. Classroom education needs to provide a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be current and conform with industry standards. Training programs differ in length and the type of credential provided, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and credential will best fulfill your needs. Every program offers unique options for certification as well. Probably the best approach to research your final list of schools is to check out each campus and speak with the students and faculty. Take the time to monitor a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make sure that you are confident that the program you choose is the right one for you. With the proper training, hard work and commitment, the end outcome will be a new occupation as a professional electrician in East Dubuque IL.
