Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Yates City IL electrician on power line poleThere are multiple options to receive electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Yates City IL. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Illinois vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards those who would like to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to finish and are offered by Illinois community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Illinois institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Receiving certification is also an optional means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be earned in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of competency:

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you pick not only delivers a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you may need to pass in the future.
