Royal Center IN electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Royal Center IN. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the right one? Particularly because there are a number of factors to examine. For instance, some students will begin by searching for schools that are close to their residence. After they have found some that are within driving distance, they will choose the one with the least expensive tuition. While location and cost are important, they are not the only factors that must be examined. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their job placement and graduation rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your ultimate decision when picking an electrician training school. We will address that checklist in more detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about being an electrician and the educational choices that are available.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Programs

Royal Center IN electrician on power line poleThere are multiple approaches to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Royal Center IN. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states in order to become licensed or if you would like to become certified. Bellow are brief explanations of the 3 most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Indiana vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to finish and are provided by Indiana community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at certain Indiana institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be completed prior to licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Royal Center IN electrician wiring boxElectricians in Royal Center IN can perform a vast array of services, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but commonly around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically evaluate electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be acquired in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually involves three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you select not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Schools

Royal Center IN student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have considered is enrolling in an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. Even though online schools are becoming more prevalent as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, distance learning may be a more accommodating option for individuals that have minimal time for education. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their traditional competitors. Travelling expenses from Royal Center IN are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be available on line also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our questions to ask checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Royal Center IN electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your training options. Since there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Royal Center IN region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The first two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that needs to be a feature that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are other factors that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Royal Center IN program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Royal Center IN students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many electrician technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Royal Center IN area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Royal Center IN electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Royal Center home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Royal Center IN, confirm that the schools you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.

It’s a prerequisite that any electrical training that you are considering includes a lot of hands-on training. Classes need to be smaller in size and each student should have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom instruction needs to provide a real-world context, and the curriculum should be current and in-line with industry standards. Courses differ in length and the kind of credential provided, so you will need to ascertain what length of program and certificate or degree will best satisfy your needs. Each training program provides different options for certification as well. Probably the best way to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and talk with the students and faculty. Take the time to attend a few classes.
