How to Select the Best Electrician Trade School near Arcadia Kansas

Arcadia KS electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is locating an electrician trade school near Arcadia KS. But with so many technical schools to pick from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the best one? Particularly because there are so many points to evaluate. For example, some students will begin by looking for schools that are nearby their home. When they have found a few that are within driving range, they will pick the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though cost and location are of importance, they are not the sole factors that must be evaluated. Also critical are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should influence your final decision when selecting an electrician trade school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational choices that are offered.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Arcadia KS electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Arcadia KS. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three alternatives. Frequently these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you would like to become certified. Following are short explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally provided by Kansas vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards students who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are provided by Kansas community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Kansas institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Arcadia KS electrician wiring boxElectricians in Arcadia KS can undertake a wide range of services, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After concluding an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of experience is called for before taking the licensing examination. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, in addition to understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional means for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and can be earned in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may be required to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Schools Online

Arcadia KS student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you may have looked at is selecting an online electrician school to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools are becoming more accepted as a means of attending class without needing to travel, in this case they are not entirely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require some attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the balance of the classes may be attended online, distance learning might be a more convenient choice for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online schools have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Travelling costs from Arcadia KS are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be available on line also. All of these advantages can make online electrician vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Arcadia KS electrician schoolsOnce you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Since there are so many electrician trade and vocational schools in the Arcadia KS area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must meet. The initial 2 that we discussed were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an online degree, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your decision, there are other variables that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifiers that you will need to analyze prior to selecting an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Make certain that the Arcadia KS program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Arcadia KS grads acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Arcadia KS area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Arcadia KS electrical company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Arcadia home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Arcadia KS, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
