    Mapleton, Kansas

    Mapleton was originally called Eldora, and under the latter name was founded in 1857.[7] A post office was established under the name Mapleton in 1857.[8] The first store in Mapleton opened in 1858.[9] In 1861, the name of the town was officially changed to Mapleton, matching the name of the post office.[10] Mapleton was so named for a grove of maple trees near the original town site.[11]

    Mapleton is located at 38°0′50″N 94°52′58″W / 38.01389°N 94.88278°W / 38.01389; -94.88278 (38.013965, -94.882741).[12] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.50 square miles (1.29 km2), of which, 0.49 square miles (1.27 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.[1]

    As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 84 people, 41 households, and 22 families residing in the city. The population density was 171.4 inhabitants per square mile (66.2/km2).
