Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Programs

Oakley KS electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Oakley KS. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are short descriptions of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Kansas vocational and trade schools and require about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve 2 years to complete and are offered by Kansas junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Kansas institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out before licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Oakley home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they have earned.
