But with numerous technical schools to select from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially since there are so many points to examine. For example, many potential students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. Once they have found a few that are within driving range, they will choose the one with the least expensive tuition. Although cost and location are important, they are not the sole things that must be evaluated. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifications should influence your ultimate decision when picking an electrician trade school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational options that are available.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Riverton KS electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Riverton KS. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the first three options. In many cases these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are short descriptions of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Kansas vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees involve two years to complete and are provided by Kansas community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at some Kansas institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Prerequisites

Riverton KS electrician wiring boxElectricians in Riverton KS can perform a wide range of functions, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but typically about 4 to 5 years of practical experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be obtained in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you enroll in not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Riverton KS student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have contemplated is choosing an electrician online school to earn a certificate or degree. Although online training programs are becoming more prevalent as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to receive hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, internet learning may be a more practical choice for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as a bonus numerous online training programs have a cheaper tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Driving costs from Riverton KS are also minimized and some of the study materials may be accessed online as well. All of these benefits can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Riverton KS electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Because there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Riverton KS region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must satisfy. The initial two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other factors that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze prior to choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance electrical technology. Verify that the Riverton KS school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a quality education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Riverton KS grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Riverton KS area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Riverton KS electrical company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your Riverton home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Riverton KS, confirm that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
