Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Saint George KS electrician on power line poleThere are several ways to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Saint George KS. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you want to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Kansas vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are provided by Kansas community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Kansas colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Criteria

Saint George KS electrician wiring boxElectricians in Saint George KS can undertake a vast array of duties, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The length of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally about 4 to 5 years of experience is required before taking the licensing examination. The exams usually test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also an optional method for an electrician to identify her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be obtained in various specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only delivers a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might be required to take in the future.

But since the balance of the classes can be accessed online, internet learning might be a more convenient option for students that have limited time for schooling. And as a bonus many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on-campus alternatives. Travelling costs from Saint George KS are also minimized and a portion of the study materials can be available on line as well. Each of these benefits can make electrician online vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Tech Schools

Questions to ask Saint George KS electrician schoolsOnce you have decided to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Considering that there are numerous electrician trade and vocational schools in the Saint George KS area, it’s essential to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are additional factors that need to be considered also. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to research before choosing an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Saint George KS school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Saint George KS students acquire apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Saint George KS area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Saint George KS electrical contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Saint George residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Saint George KS, verify that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Classes should be small in size and each student must have their personal equipment to train with. Classroom education needs to offer a real-world context, and the curriculum should be up-to-date and in-line with industry standards. Courses differ in length and the kind of credential provided, so you will have to determine what length of program and degree or certificate will best fulfill your needs. Each training program offers different options for certification as well. Perhaps the best approach to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the students and instructors. Invest some time to monitor a few classes.
