Severy KS electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to learning to be an electrical contractor or tradesman is finding an electrician trade school near Severy KS. But with so many technical schools to choose from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the best one? Especially because there are a number of factors to consider. For instance, some students will commence by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. When they have identified several that are within commuting distance, they will choose the one with the cheapest tuition. Although location and cost are of importance, they are not the sole factors that must be evaluated. Also important are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifiers should contribute toward your final judgment when selecting an electrician school. We will discuss that checklist in greater detail later in this post. But to begin with, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the educational options that are offered.

Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Severy KS electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Severy KS. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are required by the majority of states to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Bellow are brief summaries of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically provided by Kansas vocational and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who wish to get into an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are offered by Kansas junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Kansas institutions, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be performed before licensing. For that reason, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Severy KS electrician wiring boxElectricians in Severy KS can perform a wide range of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The length of apprenticeship differs by state, but normally about 4 to 5 years of prior experience is called for in order to take the licensing exam. The exams commonly test electrical theory and general knowledge, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be acquired in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases entails three levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you choose not only provides a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Online Training Classes

Severy KS student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have considered is selecting an electrician online program to earn a certificate or degree. While online schools are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require partial attendance on campus to get hands-on practical training. But since the rest of the classes can be attended online, distance learning may be a more practical choice for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit many online degree programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their traditional alternatives. Travelling costs from Severy KS are also reduced and a portion of the study materials may be accessed online as well. Each of these benefits can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will cover in our due diligence checklist.

Things to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Severy KS electrician schoolsWhen you have decided to obtain a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to narrow down your training options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Severy KS area, it’s important to have a checklist of qualifications that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your selection, there are additional factors that must be considered as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research prior to choosing an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Verify that the Severy KS program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Severy KS grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Severy KS area electricians or electrical companies. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Severy KS electrical company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Severy home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Severy KS, verify that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
