Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

You may select a certificate or diploma program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at a few schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Michigan trade and technical schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards those who want to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are provided by Michigan junior or community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Michigan colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed before licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to be licensed in the majority of states or municipalities. The duration of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly around four to five years of experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in several specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases includes 3 levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you pick not only provides a strong educational foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you may be required to pass in the future.
