Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Kinney MN electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to obtain electrician training in a technical or vocational school near Kinney MN. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by the majority of states to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are short descriptions of the three most prevalent programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Minnesota vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs require 2 years to finish and are offered by Minnesota junior or community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Minnesota colleges, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Otherwise, ask a local Kinney MN electrical contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Kinney home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs.
