Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Oklee MN electrician on power line poleThere are three general ways to get electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Oklee MN. You can select a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Bellow are brief descriptions of the three most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally provided by Minnesota vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They furnish a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who wish to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to complete and are provided by Minnesota community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while providing the foundation that readies students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Minnesota institutions, but are less preferred at four years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be completed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available vary by state and may be earned in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually includes 3 levels of proficiency:

Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist Oklee MN students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Oklee MN electrical company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Oklee home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Oklee MN, confirm that the programs you are reviewing offer those choices.
