Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Osakis MN electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to get electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Osakis MN. You may select a certificate or diploma program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three options. Frequently these programs are made available in conjunction with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states in order to be licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are brief summaries of the three most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are typically offered by Minnesota vocational and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to complete and are provided by Minnesota community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that readies students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at certain Minnesota institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

The exams usually test general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be obtained in numerous specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they have earned.
