Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Options

Ulen MN electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a trade or technical school near Ulen MN. You may enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Bellow are brief explanations of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Minnesota vocational and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards those who want to enter an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are offered by Minnesota community colleges, usually as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are available at certain Minnesota colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be completed before licensing. Therefore, many students are eager to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their educational program.

Obtaining certification is also a voluntary means for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be obtained in several specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying organizations include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you pick not only furnishes a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Otherwise, ask a local Ulen MN electrical contractor if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your Ulen residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction.
