Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Programs

Walnut Grove MN electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician training in a vocational or trade school near Walnut Grove MN. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three options. Often these programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most typical programs available.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by Minnesota vocational and trade schools and take approximately a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs involve two years to complete and are provided by Minnesota junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Minnesota institutions, but are less favored at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, the majority of students are anxious to begin their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.
