Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their job placement and graduation rates. Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Annada MO electrician on power line poleThere are several options to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Annada MO. You may choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available combined with an apprenticeship program, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are short descriptions of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually offered by Missouri vocational and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who would like to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees require two years to finish and are provided by Missouri community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Missouri institutions, but are less popular at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and in most cases four years be performed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are eager to begin their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not part of their educational program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Annada MO electrician wiring boxElectricians in Annada MO can perform a multitude of services, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in houses and buildings comply with code standards. After completing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly about 4 to 5 years of experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, along with understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional way for an electrician to differentiate him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered differ by state and may be obtained in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) and also the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician tech school that you choose not only furnishes a strong educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to pass in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Even though online schools are becoming more popular as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this situation they are not completely internet based. Pretty much all electrician training programs require some attendance on campus to obtain practical hands-on training. But since the balance of the classes may be accessed online, distance learning may be a more convenient option for students that have minimal time for schooling. And as an added benefit numerous online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on campus alternatives. Commuting expenses from Annada MO are also lessened and a portion of the study materials may be accessed online also. Each of these advantages can make online electrician tech schools more economical and convenient. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

What to Ask Electrician Trade Schools

Questions to ask Annada MO electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to refine your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Annada MO area, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial two that we talked about were location and the cost of tuition. If you have an interest in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are other variables that must be considered also. Following is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before enrolling in an electrical technical school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Confirm that the Annada MO program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the electrician training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Annada MO students obtain apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most electrician vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Annada MO area electricians or electrical specialists. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Annada MO electrical contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Annada home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to a few of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Annada MO, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Classroom education should offer a real-world context, and the course of study should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Programs differ in length and the kind of credential provided, so you will need to determine what length of program and certificate or degree will best satisfy your needs. Each training program provides unique options for certification also. Probably the best way to research your final list of schools is to go to each campus and speak with the students and faculty.
