Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Buffalo MT electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to get electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Buffalo MT. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by the majority of states to become licensed or if you want to become certified. Following are short descriptions of the 3 most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically offered by Montana trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards those who want to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to complete and are offered by Montana community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter into their apprenticeship program.

As previously stated, Bachelor’s Degree programs are offered at some Montana colleges, but are less preferred at 4 years than the other briefer programs. Many states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed before licensing. Therefore, most students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

The exams usually assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Obtaining certification is also a voluntary way for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be acquired in various specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s crucial that the electrician vocational school that you choose not only furnishes a strong academic foundation, but also helps prepare you for passing any certification and licensing examinations that you might need to take in the future.
