Grass Range MT electrician working on circuit boardThe initial step to becoming an electrical contractor or tradesman is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Grass Range MT. But with numerous technical schools to select from, just how do you go about making sure that you enroll in the right one? Particularly because there are so many variables to examine. For instance, many potential students will begin by searching for schools that are close to their residence. Once they have located a few that are within driving range, they will select the one with the least expensive tuition. While cost and location are important, they are not the sole things that need to be evaluated. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, along with their graduation and job placement rates. These and additional qualifiers should contribute toward your ultimate judgment when choosing an electrician school. We will talk about that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But to begin with, let’s talk a little bit about being an electrician and the educational options that are accessible.

Electrician Diploma, Certificate and Degree Options

Grass Range MT electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to obtain electrician instruction in a vocational or trade school near Grass Range MT. You can select a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at some schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are required by most states in order to become licensed or if you intend to become certified. Following are brief descriptions of the three most common programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by Montana technical and trade schools and require approximately a year to finish. They provide a good foundation and are aimed towards individuals who wish to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take 2 years to complete and are provided by Montana junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more comprehensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degree programs are accessible at some Montana institutions, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Many states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and in most cases four years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, the majority of students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, especially if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Grass Range MT electrician wiring boxElectricians in Grass Range MT can perform a wide range of tasks, including installing, replacing and testing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes comply with code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to be licensed in most states or municipalities. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but commonly around four to five years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams usually evaluate general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish her or himself as a skilled and experienced professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in several specialties, including cable splicing as an example. The certification procedure in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician trade school that you choose not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may need to pass in the future.

Each of these benefits can make online electrician tech schools more affordable and convenient. And a number are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our questions to ask checklist.

Questions to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Grass Range MT electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to obtain a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to narrow down your school options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Grass Range MT region, it’s imperative to have a checklist of qualifications that each school must meet. The initial two that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be a feature that your final school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be important when making your decision, there are other factors that must be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifications that you will need to analyze before choosing an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as electrical technology. Make sure that the Grass Range MT program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Grass Range MT graduates secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrician companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Grass Range MT area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Grass Range MT electrical contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Grass Range residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of expertise is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Grass Range MT, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
