Manley NE electrician working on circuit boardThe first step to learning to be an electrical tradesman or contractor is enrolling in an electrician trade school near Manley NE. But with numerous technical schools to pick from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the ideal one? Especially because there are a number of variables to consider. For instance, many prospective students will begin by looking for schools that are close to their home. After they have identified some that are within driving distance, they will choose the one with the cheapest tuition. While location and cost are significant, they are not the sole factors that should be examined. Also important are the accreditation and reputations of the schools, as well as their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifications should contribute toward your ultimate decision when selecting an electrician training school. We will cover that checklist in greater detail later in this article. But first, let’s review a little bit about becoming an electrician and the instructional options that are available.

Electrician Degree, Diploma and Certificate Programs

Manley NE electrician on power line poleThere are three general options to receive electrician instruction in a trade or technical school near Manley NE. You can choose a diploma or certificate program, or obtain an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are available at certain schools, but are not as common as the other three alternatives. Frequently these programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program, which are required by most states to become licensed or if you wish to earn certification. Following are brief descriptions of the 3 most common programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are typically provided by Nebraska trade and technical schools and take about a year to finish. They furnish a solid foundation and are geared towards individuals who would like to enter an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degree Programs take two years to finish and are offered by Nebraska community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They provide a more well-rounded education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to join their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at certain Nebraska colleges, but are less popular at four years than the other shorter programs. Most states mandate that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically 4 years be completed prior to licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not part of their academic program.

Electrician Certification and Licensing Guidelines

Manley NE electrician wiring boxElectricians in Manley NE can undertake a multitude of tasks, including testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in houses and buildings are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The duration of apprenticeship differs by state, but generally around four to five years of prior experience is called for before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically assess general knowledge and electrical theory, along with knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to distinguish him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications offered vary by state and may be earned in many specializations, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually entails 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you choose not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps prep you for passing any certification and licensing exams that you might need to take in the future.

Enrolling in Electrician Training Classes Online

Manley NE student attending electrician school onlineAn option that you might have looked at is choosing an online electrician program to earn a degree or a certificate. Although online schools are becoming more popular as a way of attending class without needing to travel, in this situation they are not totally internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to receive practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes may be attended online, internet learning can be a more convenient option for students that have limited time for education. And as a bonus many online schools have a reduced tuition cost compared to their on-campus counterparts. Driving expenses from Manley NE are also reduced and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online as well. All of these advantages can make electrician online vocational schools more economical and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will deal with in our due diligence checklist.

Points to Ask Electrician Technical Schools

Questions to ask Manley NE electrician schoolsNow that you have decided to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to refine your training options. Because there are numerous electrician tech and trade schools in the Manley NE region, it’s important to have a checklist of criteria that each school must meet. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an online degree, then that must be an option that your final school offers. And while all three qualifiers may be critical when making your selection, there are additional factors that must be considered as well. Below is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to assess before selecting an electrical vocational school.

Accreditation.  Numerous electrician vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example electrical technology. Confirm that the Manley NE program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the electrician training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician training programs you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help Manley NE grads secure apprenticeships or employment.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of electrician training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of electrical contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Manley NE area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the electrical technician you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Manley NE electrical contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your Manley home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Manley NE, check that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

Classroom education should offer a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be current and conform with industry standards. Courses vary in length and the kind of credential offered, so you will have to determine what length of program and degree or certificate will best fulfill your needs. Each training program provides different options for certification as well. Probably The ideal means to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and talk with the students and faculty. Take the time to monitor a few classes.
