But with numerous vocational schools to choose from, just how do you go about making certain that you enroll in the right one? Particularly since there are so many points to consider. For instance, many students will begin by searching for schools that are nearby their residence. After they have located several that are within driving distance, they will select the one with the cheapest tuition. Even though location and cost are of importance, they are not the only things that should be examined. Also critical are the reputations of the schools, their accreditation, in addition to their graduation and job placement rates. These and other qualifications should help mold your ultimate decision when picking an electrician training school. We will talk about that checklist in more detail later in this post. Electrician Certificate, Diploma and Degree Options

Kenvil NJ electrician on power line poleThere are multiple ways to get electrician training in a trade or technical school near Kenvil NJ. You may enroll in a diploma or certificate program, or receive an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at certain schools, but are not as common as the first three alternatives. In many cases these programs are offered together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by most states to be licensed or if you would like to earn certification. Bellow are brief descriptions of the 3 most prevalent programs available.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by New Jersey vocational and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a solid foundation and are geared towards students who wish to join an apprenticeship faster as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take two years to finish and are offered by New Jersey junior or community colleges, typically as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They offer a more well-rounded education while providing the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As previously mentioned, Bachelor’s Degrees are accessible at some New Jersey colleges, but are less favored at 4 years than the other shorter programs. The majority of states mandate that an apprenticeship of no less than 2 years and more typically four years be carried out before licensing. Because of that, many students are anxious to commence their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their educational program.

Electrician Licensing and Certification Criteria

Kenvil NJ electrician wiring boxElectricians in Kenvil NJ can carry out a wide range of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and making sure that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are mandated to become licensed in most municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but usually around 4 to 5 years of prior experience is needed before taking the licensing exam. The exams typically assess general knowledge and electrical theory, as well as knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also an optional method for an electrician to differentiate her or himself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available vary by state and can be earned in numerous specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process usually includes three levels of competency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) along with the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s important that the electrician tech school that you choose not only delivers a solid educational foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you may be required to take in the future.

Attending Electrician Programs Online

Kenvil NJ student attending electrician school onlineA possibility that you may have looked at is enrolling in an electrician online program to earn a degree or a certificate. Even though online schools have become more accepted as a means of attending class without the need for travel, in this case they are not completely internet based. Virtually all electrician schools require partial attendance on-campus to get practical hands-on training. But since the rest of the classes can be accessed online, distance learning might be a more accommodating alternative for students that have minimal time for education. And as an added benefit many online training programs have a lower tuition cost compared to their on campus counterparts. Travelling costs from Kenvil NJ are also lessened and a portion of the study materials can be accessed online as well. Each of these advantages can make electrician online trade schools more affordable and accessible. And many are fully accredited, which we will address in our questions to ask checklist.

Topics to Ask Electrician Training Schools

Questions to ask Kenvil NJ electrician schoolsWhen you have made a decision to earn a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to focus your school options. Because there are so many electrician tech and trade schools in the Kenvil NJ area, it’s essential to have a checklist of criteria that each program must satisfy. The first 2 that we mentioned were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that needs to be an option that your chosen school offers. And even though all three qualifiers may be critical when making your determination, there are other factors that need to be taken into account as well. Following is a checklist of those added qualifications that you will need to research prior to selecting an electrical trade school.

Accreditation.  Many electrician trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as electrical technology. Confirm that the Kenvil NJ program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the electrician training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also mean that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help Kenvil NJ graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrical companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Kenvil NJ area electricians or electrical professionals. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the electrical specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Kenvil NJ electrical contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your Kenvil residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the instructors and learn what their level of expertise is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Kenvil NJ, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
