Electrician Degree, Certificate and Diploma Options

Neshanic Station NJ electrician on power line poleThere are several approaches to get electrician instruction in a technical or vocational school near Neshanic Station NJ. You can enroll in a certificate or diploma program, or earn an Associate Degree. Bachelor’s Degrees are obtainable at some schools, but are not as prevalent as the other three alternatives. Often these programs are made available together with an apprenticeship, which are mandated by the majority of states in order to be licensed or if you intend to earn certification. Following are brief explanations of the three most typical programs offered.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually provided by New Jersey technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They provide a good foundation and are geared towards individuals who want to get into an apprenticeship more quickly as a journeyman electrician.
  • Associate Degrees take 2 years to finish and are provided by New Jersey community colleges, commonly as an Associate Degree in Electrical Technology. They furnish a more extensive education while supplying the foundation that prepares students to begin their apprenticeship program.

As earlier stated, Bachelor’s Degrees are offered at certain New Jersey colleges, but are less favored at four years than the other briefer programs. Most states require that an apprenticeship of at least 2 years and more typically four years be carried out prior to licensing. For that reason, most students are eager to start their paid apprenticeship, particularly if it’s not a component of their academic program.

Electrician License and Certification Guidelines

Neshanic Station NJ electrician wiring boxElectricians in Neshanic Station NJ can perform a wide range of duties, such as testing, installing and replacing electrical systems, and ensuring that the wiring in buildings and homes are up to code standards. After finishing an apprenticeship, journeyman electricians are required to become licensed in the majority of municipalities and states. The period of apprenticeship varies by state, but normally around four to five years of experience is called for in order to take the licensing examination. The exams typically test general knowledge and electrical theory, in addition to knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC). Receiving certification is also a voluntary method for an electrician to identify him or herself as a experienced and skilled professional. The certifications available differ by state and may be earned in many specialties, such as cable splicing as an example. The certification process in most cases involves 3 levels of proficiency:

  • An experience requirement
  • Passing a written exam
  • Passing a practical exam

Examples of certifying agencies include the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NJATC) as well as the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). It’s imperative that the electrician tech school that you select not only provides a solid academic foundation, but also helps ready you for passing any licensing and certification examinations that you might need to take in the future.

The initial 2 that we discussed were location and tuition expense. If you are interested in earning an degree online, then that must be an option that your chosen school offers. And although all three qualifiers may be important when making your determination, there are other variables that must be taken into account as well. Below is a checklist of those additional qualifiers that you will need to research before enrolling in an electrical tech school.

Accreditation.  A large number of electrician technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance electrical technology. Make sure that the Neshanic Station NJ program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the electrician training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing.

High Completion and Placement Rates.  Ask the electrician schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist Neshanic Station NJ graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous electrician vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of electrician businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Neshanic Station NJ area electricians or electrical contractors. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area electrician professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the electrical tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Neshanic Station NJ electrical company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your Neshanic Station home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Neshanic Station NJ, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
